Speaking Freely
1920 - American Civil Liberties Union, 1st organization to protect free speech. (protects the rights of protest speakers, for e.g. in the case of speaking about abortion).
First Amendment (1798) - the amendment to the U.S. Constitution that guarantees free speech; the 1st of the 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution known collectively as the Bill of Rights.
In 1989, the Supreme Court defended the burning of the U.S. flag as a ”speech act” protected by the First Amendment.
Speaking Ethically
speech act - a behaviour, such as flag burning, that is viewed by law as nonverbal communication and is subject to the same protections and limitations as verbal speech.
ethical speech - speech that is respponsible, honest, and tolerant.
Use analysis and evaluation to draw conclusions and formulate arguments. To share with the audience all information that might help them reach a sound decision, including the one that may be potentially damaging to your case.
Be sensitive and tolerant to differences.
Avoid plagiarism
Vocabulary: patchwork plagiarism - failure to give credit for compelling phrases taken from another source.
Listening Ethically
Do not let the speakers differences be a barrier to ethical listening.
