- inspecting workplaces ( identifying risks and ensures that the employers are following the legal requirements)
- investigating accidents and incidents ( find cause, take legal action if law had been broken )
- providing advice and guidance ( workers know their rights , employers know how to manage risks )

- the main piece of legislation for British health and safety law , ensures that employees and employers take responsibility for maintaining a safe and healthy working environment

- employers need to reduce, prevent the exposure of the workers to hazardous materials or substances that can cause ill health
What are hazardous substances ?
- paints , varnishes , cleaning agents and adhesives
- fumes as a result of braising or soldering
- airborne particles ( dust created by sanding )
What are the 8 principles to consider under clash regulations ?
- plan and carry processes that minimises the release and spread of emissions and hazardous substances
- consider all of the relevant exposure ( skin absorption , inhalation and ingestion )
- control exposure by measures proportionate to the health risk
- provide ppe .. other suitable control measures
- check and regularly review the control measures for continuing effectiveness
- inform and train all employees on hazards and risks and the use of control measures to minimise risks
- ensure the introduction of control measures doesn’t increase the risk to health and safety
What should hazardous material typically have ?
A symbol that meets the classification labelling and packaging ( clp) or globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals ( ghs ) regulations

- fork lifts , trucks and vehicles ( flashing lights or reverse signal alarm )

- the British standard institute is the authority responsible for setting manufacturing standards for product safety and quality
How is the safety of toys ensured ?
- must comply with the toys regulation 2011, part of the European toy safety directive as well as British standards
What is the lion mark ?
The British toy and hobby association developed the lion mark in 1988
- they convey that the product has been developed with consideration of safety and quality in mind
What is the conformities European symbol ?
Sets a minimum standard of safety and manufacturing quality , that apply across all member countries of the EEC
- manufactured must ensure that their products meet at least the minimum standards or risk having them removed from the shelves of retailers throughout Europe
