Material Properties - Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is meant by toughness ?
the ability to absorb impact without fracturing
What is meant by the shear strength ?
The ability of a material to resist sliding forces along the parallel plane
What is meant by compressive strength ?
The ability of a material to withstand pushing forces without being crushed or shortened
What is meant by tensile strength ?
The ability of a material to resist a pulling or stretching force ( resisting tension )
What is meant by the elasticity of a material ?
The ability of a material to return to it original shape after the deforming force is removed
What is meant by the bending strength ?
The ability of a material to withstand forces that may bend the material
What is meant by hardness ?
- the ability of a material to resist abrasive wear such as scratched and surface indentations
What is meant by the malleability of a material ?
The ability of a material to withstand deformation under compression
What is meant by ductility ?
The ability of a material to be drawn under tension - tensile forces
What is meant by plasticity ?
The ability of a material to be permanently deformed
What is meant by torsion strength?
The ability of a material to withstand twisting forces from an applied torque
What is meant by the mechanical properties of a material ?
How a material reacts to an external force
What is meant by physical properties ?
The structure of the material
What is meant by density ?
The mass per unit volume
What is meant by fusibility ?
The ability of a material to be fused or converted from a solid to a liquid, usually by heat
When would good fusibility be essential ?
When a metal is being casted
What is meant by magnetism ?
The natural force between objects that causes the material to attract irons or steels
What is meant by corrosion / degradation resistant?
The ability of the material to withstand environmental attack or decay
What is meant by an electrical conductor ?
Allows the flow of electrical current through the material - a good conductor gives very little resistance to the flow of electrons
What is meant by an electrical insulator ?
A materials that doesn’t allow there to be a flow of electricity
What is meant by a thermal conductor ?
A material that allows there to be a transfer of heat through the material - good thermal conductivity ensures that the heat can transfer quickly across the material
What is meant by a thermal insulator ?
A material which that prevents the transfer of heat
What is meant by thermal expansion ?
An increase in a materials volume in response to a heat input
What is meant by opaque?
The prevention of light travelling through a medium
