Metals Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is the general relationship between the complexity of stock forms and their cost?
The more complex the stock form or the more material the stock form contains, the more expensive it is.
What is the thickness range of sheet metal?
Less than 1 mm up to approximately 3 mm.
How is plate metal defined in terms of thickness?
Thicker than 3 mm and narrower than sheet metals.
What are the different forms of bar metal?
- Solid form
- Flat bar
- Square bar
- Round bar
- Hexagonal bar
What is the cross-section shape of tube metal?
Hollow in cross-section and can be square, rectangular, round, or hexagonal.
What types of structural angular shapes are included in metal stock forms?
- H beams
- L beams (angle)
- I beams
- Tee bar
- Channel
What is metal, in terms of its natural occurrence?
A naturally occurring material mined from the ground in the form of ore.
What percentage of the Earth’s crust is made up of metal ores?
Approximately 25 percent.
What is the most common ore from which aluminium is made?
Bauxite.
What processes are involved in extracting raw metal from ore?
- Crushing
- Smelting
- Heating
- Addition of chemicals
- Huge amounts of electrical energy
Why can metals be easily recycled?
Due to their low melt point.
What ore is copper extracted from?
Chalcopyrite.
What ore is aluminium extracted from?
Bauxite.
What ore is tin extracted from?
Cassiterite.
What ore is zinc extracted from?
Zinc blende.
What are the three main categories of metals?
- Ferrous metal
- Non-ferrous metal
- Alloy
What defines a ferrous metal?
A metal containing mostly iron and carbon.
What defines a non-ferrous metal?
A metal that does not contain iron.
What is an alloy?
A metal made of two or more metals, or combining two or more elements, one of which must be a metal.
