2/24- Ch. 5 (Exam 1) Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are lipids?
Non polar
Hydrophobic
Ex: triglyceride- 1 glycerol (3 carbons) and 3 fatty acids
What is fatty acids?
Hydrocarbon (non polar)
What is the acid part of the molecule?
COOH
What links each carbon on glycerol and fatty acid?
Dehydration synthesis
What is the covalent bond of these triglycerides?
Ester linkages
What are saturated fats?
No double bonds
Fatty acid is saturated with hydrogens
Filled to the max
Solid in room temp
What are unsaturated fats?
At least 1 double bond
Liquid at room temp
What does cis mean?
Hydrogens on the same side of the bond
What does trans mean?
Hydrogens on the opposite side of the bond
What is a phospholipid?
Major component of plasma membrane
Cell signaling
What is the plasma membrane made of?
Phospholipid bilayer
What do the hydrophilic heads point towards?
Water
What do the hydrophobic tails point to?
Each other
What are steroids?
Ring structures
Lipids
Ex: cholesterol, cortisol (stress hormone), sex hormones
What is cholesterol?
Major component of the plasma membrane
Keeps fatty acids from getting too close from one another by going between them
Animal cell membrane
What are the 2 ways cholesterol is transported in the body?
1) HDL
2) LDL (problematic)
What are triglycerides for?
Long term energy storage
