[2] Biological Basis of Behavior [Sleep & Memory] Flashcards
(19 cards)
Consciousness
Our awareness of ourselves and the environment.
Circadian rhythm (sleep/wake cycle)
The biological clock that regulates sleep and wakefulness over a 24-hour period.
Jet lag
The temporary disruption of the circadian rhythm due to rapid travel across time zones.
Shift work
A work schedule that requires employees to work non-traditional hours, often leading to circadian disruptions.
NREM stage 1
The initial stage of non-REM sleep, characterized by light sleep and the onset of relaxation.
Hypnagogic sensations
Sensory experiences that occur during the transition from wakefulness to sleep.
NREM stage 2
A deeper stage of NREM sleep, where heart rate and body temperature decrease.
NREM stage 3
The deepest stage of NREM sleep, associated with restorative processes.
REM sleep
Rapid Eye Movement sleep, where most vivid dreaming occurs and the body experiences temporary paralysis.
REM rebound
The increased intensity and duration of REM sleep following sleep deprivation.
Activation-synthesis (dreams)
A theory suggesting that dreams are the brain’s attempt to make sense of random neural activity during REM sleep.
Consolidation theory (dreams)
A theory proposing that dreams play a role in consolidating memories and processing emotions.
Memory consolidation
The process by which short-term memories are stabilized into long-term storage, especially during sleep.
Restoration of resources
The theory that sleep restores the body’s energy reserves and repairs tissue.
Insomnia
A sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
Narcolepsy
A disorder characterized by uncontrollable episodes of sleep, often with sudden and intense sleep attacks.
REM sleep behavior disorder
A condition where people physically act out their dreams during REM sleep, potentially leading to injury.
Sleep apnea
A disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
Somnambulism (sleepwalking)
A sleep disorder characterized by walking or performing other activities while asleep.
