[3] Cognition [Visual Cues] Flashcards
(11 cards)
Binocular depth cues
Depth cues that require the use of both eyes such as retinal disparity and convergence.
Retinal disparity
The slight difference in the images seen by each eye that leads to a sense of depth.
Convergence
The inward turning of the eyes when focusing on a nearby object contributing to depth perception.
Monocular depth cues
Cues to depth perception available to one eye including relative size
Relative clarity
The clarity or crispness of an object’s outline which indicates its distance with sharper objects appearing closer.
Relative size
The perception of objects as smaller the farther away they are and larger when they are closer.
Texture gradient
The gradual change in texture detail becoming finer with distance
Linear perspective
A cue for depth perception where parallel lines appear to converge as they recede into the distance.
Interposition
The cue that when one object overlaps another the partially covered object is perceived as farther away.
Perceptual Constancies
The tendency to see objects as stable and unchanging despite changes in sensory information.
Apparent movement
The perception of movement in static images through sequential flashes or the rapid presentation of still images.
