2) Diffusion And Osmosis Flashcards
(23 cards)
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Osmosis
The movement of water particles, across a semi- permeable membrane, from an area of high water concentration to low water concentration
What needs to happen in order for a cell to function properly
Raw materials that are needed for life processes need to enter the cell trough the semi - permeable membrane, and waste products must be removed from the cell
What are the raw material that need to enter the cell
- glucose - cellular respiration
- proteins - muscle/ hormones/ enzymes
- water - all chemical reactions
- fats/ lipids - insulation
What are the waste products that exit the cell
- excess water
- excess vitamins and nutrients
- carbon Dioxide
- urea ( skin )
- urine ( kidneys )
- uric acid ( kidneys )
What useful substances may be secreted for the use of other cells
- enzymes
- hormones
- amino acids
What is passive theta sport
Transport that requires no energy
What is active transport.
Transport that requires energy ( ATP )
Facilitated diffusion
Uses transport proteins to move across a membrane
What is an isotonic solution ( give example )
A solution where the solute and water particles are the same both in the solution and in the cell.
Eg. Blood
What is a hypertonic solution ( give example )
In the solution there is a high water potential and in the cell there is a low water potential. ( there are more water particles in the cell and more solute particles in the solution ). The water from the cell moves out into the solution to reach equilibrium and the cell shrinks or shrivels.
Eg. Salty solution / saline
What is a hypotonic solution ( give an example )
There is a low water potential in the solution and a high water potential in the cell. ( There are more solute particles in the cell and there are more water particles in the solution ). The water from the solution moves into the cell to create equilibrium and the cell expands/ bursts
Eg. Distilled water
What is it called when water moves equally in both directions
Dynamic diffusion or equilibrium
Which organ insures that our blood is an isotonic solution
Kidneys ( blood passes through kidneys )
What is maintaining the correct water balance in the body called.
Osmoregulation
in a hypertonic solution, What are the solutes in the solution ( high, moderate or low )

in a hypertonic solution the solute so inside the cell are … ( high, moderate or low )
Moderate
in a hypertonic solution the water potential inside the cell is … ( high, moderate or low )

Low
In a hypotonic solution, the solutes in the solution are… ( high, moderate or low )
Low
In a hypotonic solution, the solutes inside the cell are… ( high, moderate or low )
