2.1 The Importance of Cell Divison Flashcards
(4 cards)
3 functions of cell division
Growth, repair, reproduction
Growth
Once a cell reaches a certain size it must divide into two smaller cells.
Because the volume of cytoplasm grows at a higher rate that the surface area, so once the cell grows beyond a certain cell it must divide to function properly. (Multicellular)
Repair
Multicellular organisms repair damaged cells by cell division.
Ex. Old dead skin cells are replaced every second
Reproduction
-Unicellular organisms
-A single celled bacterium uses cell division to form 2 identical bacteria that contain same structures and carry out same function of parent.
-Some multicellular organisms such as mushroom also reproduce by cell division
- there is still lots to learn about why some cells reproduce at different rates than others
