2.4 Membranes Flashcards
(27 cards)
Membrane def
FLAT sheets of flexible tissue that cover or line parts of the body
2 types of membranes
Epithelial
Synovial
Epithelial membrane
Lining epithelium + underlying lamina propria
(connective tissue):
- Mucous
- Serous
- Cutaneous or skin
Synovial membrane
Lining joints. They only contain connective tissue.
Where is mucosa
organ cavities which open directly to the exterior (mouth, stomach, vagina, urethra…)
Mucus secreted by…
Goblet cells
Mucus function
Prevents cavities from drying
Also defense against microorganisms and effects of acids.
Mucous membranes made of
Epithelium
Lamina propia
Epithelium of mucous membranes
Strong intercellular links: tight junctions: prevent leakage
of substances. Protect from pathogens.
Lamina propia def and function
AREOLAR connective tissue (vascularized and innervated)
Support-stability-protection.
Serous membrane also called
Serosa
Where is serosa found
organ cavities which DO NOT open directly to the exterior
(pleura, peritoneum and pericardium)
Types of cells and tissue of serosa
Simple squamous epithelium (mesothelium) + areolar connective tissue
Two layers of serosa
Parietal layer (external)
Visceral layer (interior: attached to cavity organs)
Function serous membrane
Epithelial cells secrete a lubricating fluid to reduce friction from muscle movements
(pleural, pericardial or peritoneal fluid)
Inflammation of the serous membrane with an increase in fluid
secretion =-itis.
Cutaneous membrane layers
Epidermis
Dermis
Epidermis
keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Dermis
dense irregular connective tissue and areolar connective tissue
Where are synovial membranes found
line the cavities of free movable joints. Bursae and tendon sheaths
(they do not open to the exterior)
Tissue synovial membrane
Areolar and adipose connective tissue
Difference synovial membrane and serosa
No epithelial cells
Specialized cells of synovial membranes
Synoviocytes which secrete synovial fluid:
a) lubricant.
b) nutritive (avascular cartilage/ vascularized synoviocytes)
c) defense: macrophages.
Alterations in the mucosa of oral cavity
Changes in normal structure
Periodontal disease
Bacterial or viral infection
Dermatological diseases
Changes in normal structure
Fissured tongue, medial rhomboid glossitis, lingual varicosities.
