What is maturation in psychological development?
Maturation is a biologically programmed process of growth.
Follows a fixed sequence and supports development as we age.
What is plasticity in brain development?
Plasticity is the brain’s ability to change shape physically.
It happens in response to learning and experience.
What is a critical period in psychological development?
A critical period is a narrow, fixed time in early development when a person or animal is most vulnerable to missing key environmental experiences.
Has a clear start and end time, usually shorter than a sensitive period.
Example: A kitten’s eye must be exposed to light early on, or it will never develop sight.
What is a sensitive period in psychological development?
A sensitive period is a stage during biological maturation when an organism is most able to gain a particular skill or characteristic
It begins and ends gradually
What is Imprinting?
Imprinting is a simple type of learning where a very young animal attaches to the first object it sees after birth, usually a parent, and will follow it from then on.
