2nd Unit Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is a Neuron?
A type of cell that recieves/sends messages from the body to the brain and back to the body.
How many neurons are in the brain?
86 billion
What are the three principle functions of the Nervous System?
1) Sensory input
2) Inter Neuron
3) Motor Output
How are Neurotransmitters and Hormones alike?
They’re both chemical messages within the Nervous system
How are Neurotransmitters and Hormones different?
Hormones travel through the bloodstream
Neurotransmitters travel through neurons
Who travels messages faster -Neurotransmitters/ Hormones?
Neurotransmitters travel quicker
Hormones take several seconds to travel (not that slow just a bit slower than neurotransmitters
What do Dendrites do for a Neuron?
transfer the received information to the SOMA of the neuron
What is a cell body? And what is another word for it?
the nucleus-containing central part of a neuron
another word: SOMA
What is an Axon Hillock?
Gate/door for the information that was pent up in the cell body through axon.
What is an action potential?
an action potential is the electrical pulse that carries messages between neurons, allowing the nervous system to function
How does Axon Hillock and Action Potential work together?
A gate/door that opens up when enough information has been integrated inside the cell body. Then pushed through the Axon
What is an Axon?
A long fiber tube
What is a Myelin Sheath?
A fattie tissue that protects the Axon so information is able to go through safely
What is a synapse?
the little gap between a Axon terminal and another dendrite/cell
What is an Axon terminal?
the end of the neuron where it sends information to another cell/neuron
What is the process of our nervous system?
1) Sensory Neuron
2) Spinal chord
3) Inter neuron
4) Motor neuron
What surrounds the neuron
A cell body
What systems does PNS control?
Motor and Sensory neurons
What systems does the CNS control?
Brain and Spinal Chord
Which system controls our involuntary responses?
Automatic nervous system
Which system controls our voluntary responses?
Somatic nervous system
Which system controls our fight or flight reaction?
sympathetic
Which system controls our rest and digest reaction?
parasympathetic
Give an example of Automatic nervous system
heartbeat, digestion, walking, etc.
