3rd Unit (second notes) Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the frontal lobe responsible for?
Controlling a persons personality and decision making
What is our Reptillian Brain?
It is our brain stem, and cerebellum, and is the oldest part.
What does brain stem control?
Brain stem controls the most basic functions of life, like breathing, attention, and motor responses (for survival purposes)
What would likely happen if a person suffers a stroke in the brain stem area?
They would likely die or be paralyzed.
What are parts of the brain stem?
Some parts of the brain stem include: Medulla, pons, reticular formation, and thamalus
What is the Cerebellum? And where is it located?
The cerebellum is the little brain. It is located near the back of the head and brain stem
What does the two cerebellum do?
Give TWO examples:
The cerebellum controls our balance for walking, standing, and other complex motor functions.
EX: Ballet, catching a ball, writing, etc.
What system is the Mammalian Brain controlled by?
The Limbic system
What does the limbic system govern?
The Limbic system governs emotions and memory
What else does the Limbic system include?
Amygalda, hippocampus, and hypothamulus.
What is our ‘higher order brain’
It is considered our Cerebral Cortex
What is our most advanced/largest part of our brain?
The Cerebral Cortex
How many lobes is the cerebral cortex divided into, and name those specific parts.
It is divided into 4 main lobes; frontal, parietal, ocipital, and temporal (each lobe has two parts, LEFT and RIGHT)
What is the higher order brain in control of?
In charge of our reasoning, language, observing patterns, and creativity.
SCENARIO: Imagine parts of your neocortex is damaged, what would happen?
Possible death, paralyzed, not talk, RARELY a coma, not be able to walk, not be able to think, personality changes, become more unstable/gruesome, etc.
What part of the brain does the Limbic System control?
The Mammalian Brain
