3.1 Notes - The Biosphere Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does the biosphere contain?
It contains portions of the planet in which all life exist.
What does an ecologist do?
An ecologist asks questions to understand relationships within the biosphere.
5 Levels of Organization
Species- Group of organisms that are so similar to one another that they can breed and produce offspring.
Population- Group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Community- Assembly of different populations that live together in an area.
Ecosystem- Collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place together with their physical environment.
Biome- Group of ecosystems that have the same climate and dominate communities.
What is the highest level of organizations that an ecologist can study?
Biosphere
What are the three basic ways that scientist conduct ecological research?
Observing, experimenting, and modeling.
Why might an ecologist setup an artificial environment in a laboratory?
An ecologist would setup an artificial environment in a lab to imitate and manipulate conditions that organisms would encounter in the natural world.
Why are many ecological phenomenon difficult to study?
They occur over long periods of time or on such large scales.
Why do ecologist make models?
Gain insight into the complexity of the natural world.
An ecological model may consist of a mathematical formula. TRUE OR FALSE?
True
What is ecology?
The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment.
