3.11 ATP Flashcards
(6 cards)
what are the uses for ATP?
Biosynthesis of macromolecules
Active transport
Nerve transmisson
Growth and repair
Movement
Emission of light
state the advantages of ATP
-releases energy in small amounts (one phosphate group at a time) to reduce the waste of energy
-small and soluble makes it easy to transport
-cant leave the cell so the cell will always have an energy supply
-easily regenerated
what is ATP?
A phosphorylated nucleotide made up of 3 phosphate groups, a pentose sugar-ribose and a nitrogenous base- adenine.
how is energy released from ATP?
the phosphate groups are covalently bonded together and store potential energy so when these bonds are broken they release this energy. (approximately 30.6KJmol-1 per bond)
what is the reversible equation for the breaking down of ATP?
energy + ADP +Pi <=> ATP +H2O
what enzymes are involved in the condensation and hydrolysis reaction of ATP
condensation= ATP synthase
hydrolysis= ATPase
