Q

The trend in melting points of Group 2 elements is generaally a ..?

A

decrease (exception from Mg>Ca)

  • Each metal ion has 2 delocalised electrons
  • Each successive shell adcded with each electron
  • more inner shielding/larger ionic radius
  • less strong attraction to the nucleus
  • takes less energy to melt most of the bonds

Q

Uses of group 2 metal hydroxides?

A

Mg(0H)2- useful to neutrilsie stomach acid
Mg(0H)2 + 2HCL > MgCl + H20
Ca(OH)2 - slaked lime- used to neutriise soil acidity
OH- + H+ > H20

Q

The pattern of sulphates and hydroxides (group 2)

A

As you go down from Be>Ba

  • the group 2 sulfates decrease down the group
  • the group 2 hydroxides increase in solubility down the group
  • ALWAYS a white precipitate

Q

Why can barium sulfate be used to show x-rays?

A

because although barium is poisonous, barium sulfate is extremely insoluble so it can pass through the body without dissolving in any of the body fluids
Ability to absorb x-rays means it can produce an image for medical prroblems

Q

BaCl + NaS04 > ..?
ionic equation=
how can barium sulfate be detected?

A

BaS04 + NaCl
Ba2+ (aq) + S042- > BaS04 (s)
Because BaCl is soluble, when you add S04 ions it makes a white precipitate (used to identify sulfates)
