what is a coping strategy?
a specific method (affective, biological, cognitive or behavioural) that we use to manage or reduce stress caused by a stressor
what is context specific effectiveness
an assesment on whether a strategy matches or is appropriate for a stressful situation
what does there have to be to make a coping strategy successful?
it must match the specific demands of the stressor to the individuals personal characterisitics.
what is coping flexibility?
our abiity to modify our coping stratagies to meet the demands of different situations
what do individuals with high coping flexibility do? (2)
- quickly recognise and adjust if stratagies are ineffective
- tend to use a wider variety of stratagies across situations
what do individuals with low coping flexibility do? (2)
- tend to rely on the same, limited coping stratagies across different situatons, and persist with them even though htey know they are ineffective
- the are not flexible and are predictable
what are the 2 coping stratagies
avoidance & approach
what is the aim of both avoidance and approach?
to reduce stress levels and increase the ability to cope
what are approach stratagies? give examples
involve confronting the stressor directly
eg. making notes, creating cue cards, testing with a friend
what are avoidance stratagies? give examples
involve evading a stressor and dealing with it indirectly
eg. hanging out with friends as a distraction, not thinking abt it, deciding you dont care abt ur result
