5A - Classical Conditioning Flashcards
(14 cards)
what is classical conditioning?
a three phase process that involved developing an association with a stimulus (or stimuli) that results in a learned response
what is a stimulus?
anything that precedes an action
eg. the food
what is a response?
a reaction to the stimulus
eg. wagging and jumping
what are the 3 steps in the 3 phase process of classical conditioning
Before, During and After Conditioning
neutral stimulus (NS)
any stimulus that does not cause any relevent response before conditioning
unconditioned stimulus (UCS)
any stimulus BEFORE learning, which causes a naturally occuring response
Uncondtioned response (UCR)
a naturally occuring response BEFORE conditioning
what are the 2 steps of ‘before conditioning’
NS -> no response
UCS -> UCR
what happens during conditioning (3)
- 2 stimuli are associated or paired
- NS is presented firse, immediately followed by the UCS (0.5s)
- This step is repeated multiple times (acquisition)
what is the 1 step during conditioning?
NS + UCS = UCR
what happens after conditioning?
- the NS becomes the CS, through the repeated association of the previous stage (during conditioning)
conditioned stimulus (CS)
any stimulus which causes a learned response AFTER association
conditioned response (CR)
a learned response to a CS AFTER association
what is the 1 step after conditioning ?
CS -> CR
