6A - Atiinson - Shiffrin Model Flashcards
(16 cards)
what is encoding?
the process of converting raw information from stimuli into a useable form
what is storage?
retaining converted information so it can be accessed and used in the future
what is retrieval?
accessing information which has been previously stored in the brain
atkinson shiffrin model - sensory memory
information is lost if not attended to
atkinson shiffrin model - STM
information decays (fading over time) or is displaced (pushed out by new incoming information) if not rehersed.
atkinson shiffrin model - LTM
some information may be lost over time
sensory information
a filter for what is relevent
e.g. when your having a conversation, ignoring all the commotion around you
sensory memory - capacity & duration
capacity - unlimited
duration - 0.2 - 4 seconds
short term memory - capacity & duration
capacity - 7 +- 2 (or 5-9 items)
duration - 12 - 30 seconds
how can short term memory be manipulated?
chunking and maintenence rehersal
what is chunking?
grouping smaller ‘chunks’ of information into larger ‘chunks’ in order to hold more information in the STM
what does chunking do?
increases capacity
what does maintenence rehersal do?
involves repeating new information over and over again to keep the information in the STM for as long as possible
what does maintenence rehearsal do?
increases duration
function of LTM
to store information which can be retrieved for future use
LTM capacity & duration
capacity - unlimited
duration - relatively permement
