6D - Mnemonics Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is a mnemonic?
a technique used to aid then encoding, storage and retrieval of information
how do mnemonics help?
they make it easier to remember difficult information
how does mnemonics help make difficult information easier to remember?
links new information with information thats already stored in your LTM
what is an acronym?
a mnemonic device in which the first letters of the item form a pronounceable word.
eg. QANTAS
how does acronyms help in encoding?
helps you chunk information into a single, meaningful unit.
how does acronyms help in storage?
helps form a single, meaningful unit that is easier to rehearse and transfer into LTM
how does acronyms help in retrieval?
each letter acts as a retrieval cue for the first letter of each word to help bring the targeted information from LTM into STM for use
eg. Never Eat Soggy Weetbix
what are acrostics?
a mnemonic device in which the first letters od the items create a phase, rhyme or poem.
eg. All Roads Require Maintenence Regularly (Attention, Retention, Reproduction, Motivation, Reinforcement)
how do acrostics help in encoding?
create meaningful or funny sentences which make facts more engaging and easier to encode.
how do acrostics help in storage?
the unusual or humerous nature of acrostics make them more memorable, increasing the liklihood of storage in the LTM
how do acrostics help in retrival?
each letter or each word acts a a retrieval cue for the first letter of each word to help bring the targeted information from LTM into STM for use.
what is the method of loci?
a mnemonic device that converts items into mental images and associates them with specific locations to aid memory.
how does the method of loci help with encoding?
by linking new information to familiar locations, you engage both visual and spacial memory, which strengthens encoding
how does the method of loci help with storage?
the mental journey through known places provides a strong mental framework to organise and store informaion.
how does the method of loci help with retrival?
each location acts as a retrieval cue that makes it easier to retrieve information when it is needed.
