Skeletal System Flashcards
Four purposes of the skeletal system
- support the muscles
- gives the body its structure
- stores calcium and minerals
- produces red blood cells
What allows the skeleton to move?
Ligaments and tendons attach the muscles to the skeleton allowing it to move
Periosteum membrane
A membrane that covers bones and contains blood vessels and nerves
Bones produce what?
Blood cells within their marrow
How many bones are in a body?
206
Four groups of bones
Long bones
Short bones
Flat bones
Irregular bones
Describe long bones
Bones that bear the weight of the body. They are covered with cartilage on the ends where they form joints.
Example: arm and ankle
Short bones
Allow for intricate movements and are cube shaped.
Example: wrist and foot
Flat bones
Bones that protect internal organs and produce blood cells.
Example: skull and ribs and sternum
Irregular bones
All other bones, they have irregular shapes.
Example: vertebrae and ears
Joint
Point where two or more bones meet. This allows movement.
Ball and socket joints
Allow greatest movement.
Hip and shoulder
Hinge joint
Allows movement in one direction only.
Elbow and knee
Pivot joint
Allow turning from side to side.
The skull is connected to the spine by a pivot joint.
Longest bone in the body
Femur
Starts at the hip and ends at the knee. It connects via ball and socket joint
