circulatory system Flashcards
circulatory system includes what
heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, blood
how does the heart function
like a muscular pump that forces blood through the vessels
what is blood
fluid that transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones and wastes through the body.
where does blood carry from oxygen from
it carriers oxygen from the lungs to all other body cells
where does blood carry nutrients from
carriers nutrients from the digestive tract to other body cells
where does blood carry waste from
carriers waste to the kidneys
describe coronary vessels
branch of the aorta to supply the heart muscle
why is it important for the heart muscle to relax?
to allow blood to flow thru the vessels of the heart
What happens if the heart doesn’t relax
if the heart beats too fast it cant relax. The proper amount of blood cannot flow into the heart vessel to supply the muscle with oxygen
describe lymph nodes
sort of a one way circulation. they collect fluid from surrounding cells and channel it into a set of lymph tubes.
lymph nodes= filtering system
3 things necessary for good circulation
pump (heart muscle)
blood vessels with good elastic walls
adequate amount of blood (5L)
describe the ATRIA
top chamber of the heart
serves as a collecting chamber for the blood returning to the heart, valves close off these chambers
What direction does blood move within the heart
moves in one direction, forward and out of the heart
describe the ventricles
lower chambers of the heart, very strong muscles
describe the left ventricle
largest side, responsible for moving all the blood around the body
