Ear Flashcards
How many sections are in the ear?
Three
Outer, middle, inner
What is the outer section of the ear?
The ear structure on side of the head and the auditory canal leading into the head.
What is the auditory canal?
The tube leading into the head
What is the tympanic membrane and what does it do?
It’s the eardrum and it closes off the auditory canal
What is the middle section of the ear and what does it contain?
It’s a hallow space containing three small bones called the malleus, incus, stapes.
What are the malleus, incus and staples responsible for?
Forming a bridge connecting the eardrum to the inner ear and transmitting vibrations between the tympanic membrane and the inner ear.
Which bone attaches to the tympanic membrane?
The malleus bone
Describe the purpose of the Eustachian tube
It connects the middle ear to the throat. This tube allows air to pass between the middle ear and throat equalizing pressure.
What does the cochlea do?
It translates sound vibrations into the nerve impulses that are sent to the brain by the auditory nerve.
What is the auditory nerve?
The nerve responsible for sending messages to the brain for sound.
What are semi circular canals?
Canals filled with fluid that help the body keep its balance.
What are the ten parts of the ear?
Semicircular canals, auditory nerve, cochlea, Eustachian tube, stapes, incus, tympanic membrane, external auditory canal, outer ear, malleus
