respiratory system Flashcards
what is responsible for exhalation? how does it work?
alveoli
very elastic, they move the air out of the lungs by a recoil effect.
what happens when there is damage to the alveoli muscle
it will interfere with the removal of air from the lungs
what happens during a lung infection
lungs have difficulty moving the air out of the lungs. if CO2 is not exhaled, air remains in the lungs and makes it difficult to breath. this can develop chronic lung problems
what membrane lines the lungs and what does it do
serous membrane
secretes mucous that traps dust and prevents dry dirty air from reaching the alveoli
purpose of the nose
warms, filters air.
provides an opening through which air enters and leaves the body
describe the pharynx
throat
tube shaped for air, food.
larynx is located within it
describe the trachea
windpipe
leads into the upper chest and branches into 2 smaller tubes
describe the bronchi
enters the lungs and divides into smaller branches. they end up as tiny air sacs called alveoli
describe lungs
2 lungs
protected by the chest cavity, serous membranes
attached to the bronchi
describe the diaphragm
thin but strong muscle that stretches across the entire body by the lower rib.
contracts pulling the lungs down (pulling air air in) and relaxes allowing alveoli to expel air
what is responsible for inhalation
the diaphragm and muscles between each rib
describe the respiratory system
system containing a group of passages that filter incoming air and transports it into the lungs and bloodstream
what is breathing
bodily function that occurs automatically and can be controlled
what is respiratory rate
number of breaths a person takes in one minute
describe cilia
defense system for the respiratory system. tiny hair like projections that grow from the serous membrane. sweep particles from the air
