  • 3rd Golden Age of the Silk Road under the Pax Mongolica
  • Religiously tolerant
  • Never took Japan or Egypt
  • pastoral nomads
  • superior use and knowledge of the horse
  • could travel up to 90 miles in a day on horseback (compared to the Romans 30 miles)
  • with the help of captured Chinese artisans and military commanders they built an arsenal full of siege weapons like battering rams and catapults that hurled rocks, explosive balls and bamboo rockets

  • Mongols caused Russia to develop differently then the rest of Europe (no Renaissance in Russia)
  • they also influenced changes in Russian military organisation and tactics plus changes in the political style of Russian rulers

  • Mongols at top of social hierarchy, women retained their rights to property
  • Chinese were forbidden to learn the Mongol language, marry Mongols, stopped civil service exam, foreigners were welcomed, merchants were prized, Christianity made its way into China
  • two attempts to take Japan, both failed (1274 and 1280)
  • Mongols were not very good on the water
  • Chinese culture remained intact
  • when Mongols ran out by the Ming, Chinese culture came right back without issue
