  • begins in England
  • new “isms”
  • can trace nearly everything beyond 1750 back to Industrial revolution
  • rise of the British Empire
  • had all the makings for it: raw materials (coal and iron), innovations, government, spirit, workforce, and this followed their agricultural revolution
  • enclosure movement - made land private, and now marketable; with people migrating to the city (urbanization)
  • money and capital was dedicated to new industrial ideas, technology, and markets
  • new inventions: i.e. spinning jenny
  • cottage system to factories: using water as power, then eventually the steam engine (which factories didn’t need to be around water sources)
  • pollution, sanitation, and overcrowding becomes an issues
  • industrialization would lead to mercantilism and the need to create unfair trade balances
  • a work force FROM the Enclosure Acts
  • industry begins with textiles (around 1750)
