to either the lateral thalamus and then the primary somatosensory cortex
or to the medial thalamus and then to the cerebral cortex

A

well actually two kinds:
if it goes to the lateral thalamus then it will cause sensory-discriminative pain
but if it goes to the medial thalamus it will cause motivational-affective pain
