Q

how do alveoli carry out gas exchange in the body

A

the blood passing next to the alveoli has just returned to the lungs from the rest of the body so it has very little oxygen but lots of carbon dioxide
the oxygen diffuses out of the alveolus into the blood
the CO2 diffuses out of the blood into the alveolus to be breathed out
the oxygen is then released and diffuses into the body cells
the CO2 then diffuses out of the body cells into the blood back into the lungs
