7.1.2 Rapid Intervention Crew Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is the purpose of the Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC)?
To ensure that properly trained and equipped personnel are available to rescue firefighters operating at high hazard incidents.
What does ‘Mayday’ indicate?
A word indicating that a life is in danger, and immediate assistance is needed.
What does ‘Mayday Cleared’ mean?
A message indicating that a previously declared Mayday has been resolved and the firefighter(s) are no longer at risk.
What is a Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC)?
A dedicated crew of firefighters assigned for rapid deployment to rescue lost or trapped members.
What constitutes a Working Structure Fire?
A fire in a structure requiring a 1 ¾” handline or larger and the use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for members entering the hazardous area.
What is the Initial Rapid Intervention Crew (IRIC)?
A crew intended to provide firefighter rescue during the initial stage of a working structure fire until additional assistance arrives.
What is the minimum number of firefighters required on the fireground before conducting interior firefighting operations?
At least four (4) firefighters.
What are the requirements for members making up the IRIC?
They must be properly trained in firefighter rescue, don PPE including SCBA, maintain a standby position, and be capable of communication with the interior crew.
What should the IRIC do upon deployment?
Advise Campbell County Dispatch and incoming units of their deployment and maintain communication with both interior crews and incoming units.
What are the exceptions to not establishing an IRIC?
Victim rescue where credible information indicates a victim is likely in the building or if the fire is in the incipient stage.
How many firefighters are required to form a RIC?
A minimum of three (3) firefighters, preferably 4-6 for an average size residential structure fire.
What is the role of the RIC Group Supervisor?
To communicate with the Incident Commander (IC) and obtain vital information regarding the incident.
What equipment should RIC members assemble upon arrival?
Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC), SCBA RIC Pack, search rope, set of irons, saws, and scene-specific tools.
What should the RIC Group Supervisor do after deployment?
Communicate directly with the firefighter declaring the Mayday and develop an action plan for rescue.
What should happen after a Mayday is resolved?
A ‘Mayday Cleared’ message should be communicated on all fireground channels and to Campbell County Dispatch.
What incidents may require multiple RICs?
Fires in residential apartment complexes, large buildings, or situations with multiple entry points for interior crews.
What is a Special Operation RIC?
A RIC established for incidents requiring technical expertise beyond the scope of Newport Fire / EMS.
