To establish guidelines for the response of fire department personnel and equipment to water rescue incidents.

What does the scope of the River Incidents procedure cover?
It establishes a standard structure and guideline for all fire department personnel operating at water rescue incidents.
What is the phased approach to water rescue operations?
Arrival, Pre-rescue operations, Rescue operations, and Termination.
What is the first step in establishing command at a river incident?
The first arriving company officer shall assume Command and begin an immediate size up of the situation.
What should be assessed during the size-up?
Immediate and potential hazards to the rescuers, and the need for a rescue plan and back-up plan.
What should be done if no witnesses are present at the scene?
Command may have to look for clues on the scene to determine what happened.
What is the standard response for river emergencies?
Engine 901, Medic 981 or 982, and 951 OIC.
What must be determined before initiating rescue operations?
Whether it will be a rescue operation or a recovery operation based on the survivability profile of the victim(s).
What should personnel wear when operating within 10ft of a waterway?
A Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD).
What communication method should be used for river emergencies?
All communications should be conducted on the 800 MHz radios.
