(14 cards)
What does VEIS stand for?
Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search
What is the purpose of VEIS?
To provide a detailed reference on VEIS parameters, necessary tools, communication, tactical sequence, and additional considerations.
What is the scope of the VEIS SOG?
It applies to any working structure fire where search and rescue is needed and a viable victim is possible.
What is the first step in the VEIS process?
Vent - Ventilate the search room by breaking the window or exterior opening.
What does ‘Enter’ mean in VEIS?
Enter through the window or exterior opening, physically going into the structure.
What does ‘Isolate’ involve?
After entry, close the door in the individual room and cut off or minimize the fire or smoke.
What is the final step in VEIS?
Search - Conduct a quick, hasty, and complete search of the individual room.
When is VEIS considered?
When a primary search has not been completed and access is gained quicker and safer than through entry doors.
What are the requirements for deploying VEIS?
Minimum of two firefighters, 2 portable radios, ladders, hand tools, and a thermal imaging camera.
What is a ‘Go Scenario’ for VEIS?
Viable rescue and/or reported known location(s) of victim(s), no signs of pending flashover or backdraft, coordinated fire attack with hoselines in place, and stable floor.
What constitutes a ‘No-Go Scenario’?
No viable rescue, signs of pending flashover, post flashover, unstable floor or building conditions, or anytime PPV is operational.
What is the communication protocol during VEIS?
Maintain accountability of crew locations, advise when preparing to enter and exit, and use uniform terminology for openings.
What is the recommended tactic order for VEIS?
Perform VEIS directly above the fire room first, then search adjacent rooms on the same floor moving away from the fire.
What should be done if a victim is located during VEIS?
Remove the victim from the structure, notify Firefighter 2, isolate the door, and move EMS to the scene.
