What does Jung call the personality?
‘Psyche’
What is the ‘Psyche’?
Complex network of opposing forces which are aiming to create harmony with the structures of personality
What is ‘Life- process energy’?
Opposing forces create energy that motivate behaviour
What is the system of creating life-process energy within the psyche?
The principles of opposites
What is our emphasis on understanding the future goals or purpose of our behaviour?
Teleology
What is the endpoint of personality development?
Self-realisation
What is the principle of equivalence?
Activity increase in one part of the psyche, it decreases correspondingly in another part
What is the principle of entropy?
Drive to create balanced energies in the psyche so we express more of ourselves in our behaviour
What are the four main structures within the psyche?
Ego, personal unconscious, collective unconscious ,archetypes
What is the ego?- Jung
Unifying force at the centre of our consciousness- structure of the self
Contains thoughts and feelings of past experiences
Responsible for our identity
What is personal unconsciousness?
All experiences we have blocked from our awareness
Can be brought to our conscious in psychoanalysis
What is collective unconscious?
Innante, inherited, universal instincts that go beyond personal experience
What are archetypes?
Universal themes or symbols in our collective unconscious that can influence our current experiences
What is the archetype of ‘The Persona’?
The mask/role we adopt to deal with other people and present to the world
What is the archetype of ‘The Shadow?’
Dark side of nature
We never know the shadow side of ourselves
What is ‘The Anima’?
The feminine element of the male psyche
What is ‘The Animus’?
The male element of the female psyche
What is an extraverted personality type?
Outgoing
Candid
Adapts easily to situations
What is an introverted personality type?
Hesitant
Defensive
Hides behind a mistrustful society
What are the four differences between introverts and extrovers according to Jung (1968)?
Sensing: registering that something exists without evaluation - acting
Thinking: Interpreting using reason and logic
Feeling: Evaluating the value/worth of whats presented
Intuitive: Relating to the world with minimum interpretation
What are the opposites in these differences?
Thinking and feeling

What is the Myers Briggs Type Inventory?
An introspective self-report questionnaire and indicates preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions

Extraversion- Introversion
Sensing- Intuition

To see if dental students performance and personality are related
Result: students with judging type performed better
