Q

What is the general flow path through the Condenser Circulating Water System?

A
  1. Condenser Circulating Pumps take a suction on the outlet of the water boxes of the ‘A’ Main Condenser and discharge to the Cooling Towers
  2. Flow is normally directed to the top of all three Cooling Towers through the riser pipe which distributes water to the Hot Water Distribution Basin
  3. The Hot Water Distribution Basin distributes the water around the top of the Cooling Towers. The water then falls approximately 49 feet through the Splash Bars transferring heat to the surrounding air drawn in by the Cooling Tower Fans.
  4. Water collects in the Basin where it is directed to the outlet through screens that collect debris.
  5. Water flows via gravity to the inlet water boxes of the ‘C’ Main Condenser.
  6. The flow to the Main Condensers is split into two trains which flow through each of the condensers.

Q

What is the purpose of the Main and Main Feedwater Pump Condensers?

A
  1. Maintains plant efficiency by providing a low pressure exhaust region for steam exiting the turbines
  2. Provides subcooling to the condensate to increase NPSH
  3. Heat sink for a load rejection

16
Q

What is the Condenser Circulating Water Pump interlock associated with the Cooling Tower inlet isolation valves?

A

Only one pump can start if only one Cooling Tower inlet isolation is open

17
Q

What is the Condenser Circulating Water Pump interlock associated with an isolated flow path?

A

No pumps can start if the main condenser is isolated OR all three cooling tower inlet isolation valves are closed

18
Q

What is the Condenser Circulating Water Pump interlock associated with each pump’s discharge valve?

A
  1. When the pump discharge valve is closed, the pump will trip
  2. Each pump’s discharge valve will close automatically if the pump is secured
  3. The pump’s discharge valve will open automatically 6 seconds after its associated pump starts
19
Q

What is the Condenser Circulating Water Pump “Norm-TV” interlock?

A

A key-switch and valve selector switch is provided for the discharge valves of RC pumps. When selected the discharge valve position will be lifted to 42 degrees open following a pump start to prevent runout.

20
Q

What is the design/purpose of the Cooling Towers?

A
  1. 3 Cooling Towers available per unit
  2. 13 fans per tower
  3. 3 Towers normally in service at 100% power with all fans running
21
Q

What are the power supplies for the Cooling Tower Fans?

A

A - 1HTA
B - 2HTA
C - 1HTA or 2HTA

22
Q

What is the Cooling Tower interlock associated with the DC brake?

A
  1. The fans cannot be started if the DC brake is not functioning
  2. When a fan is shutdown the DC brake will energize
23
Q

What is the Cooling Tower interlock associated with vibrations?

A

High vibrations will trip a running fan

24
Q

What is the Cooling Tower interlock associated with low temperatures?

A

The “LOW TEMP AUTO TOWER SHUTDOWN” automatic shutdown of the cooling tower fans will occur based on RC cold water temperature as long as the system has been enabled on the OAC by the operator. This is to keep RC cold water temperature greater than 65F.

25
Q

What is the difference between safe standing ice and unsafe standing ice?

A

Safe ice is a buildup of ice on the Cooling Tower louvers that doesn’t cover and hang over the side of the louver.

26
Q

What is the purpose of Cooling Tower Blowdown?

A
  1. Used to prevent over-concentration of chemicals in the RC system
  2. Discharges to the Low Pressure Service Water(RL) System
  3. Approximately 5000gpm
27
Q

Where does Cooling Tower Makeup come from?

A

Cooling Tower Makeup comes from the RL system to makeup for all evaporation losses and blowdown

28
Q

Which condensers utilize Condenser Tube Cleaning Pumps Reinjection Pumps?

A

Only the main condenser uses RA Reinjection Pumps

29
Q

What is the purpose of the RA Reinjection Pumps?

A
  1. Two Reinjection Pumps power section of the Main Condenser
  2. Transport the balls from the upper quadrants to the lower quadrants of the ‘A’ condenser section
30
Q

What is the purpose of the RA Recirculation Pumps?

A
  1. Two Recirculation Pumps per section of the main condenser and one Recirculation Pump per CFPT
  2. Transport the balls from the ball extraction tubes of the bottom quadrants through the ball collectors to the condenser inlets
31

What is the purpose of the RA Ball Collectors?

A

Located between recirculation pumps and the injection nozzles and are used to collect RA balls for surveillance and system shut down

32
Q

Which Condenser Train has the best vacuum?

A

The ‘C’ Condenser train has the best vacuum because that is where circulating water enters first
