Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
An anxiety disorder characterized by reliving a severely upsetting event in unwanted, recurring memories and dreams
ex.) September 11th, 2001 attacks lead to PTSD
- Children experiencing or witnessing trauma
- Women are more likely to develop PTSD
Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders (Anxiety Takes on a Physical Form)
- Hypochondriasis/Illness Anxiety Disorder
- Conversion Disorder
Hypochondriasis/Illness Anxiety Disorder
Fear of illness. Preoccupation with the fear of having or the belief of having a serious illness or disease. (Going to the strong belief instantly)
- Physical sensations are misinterpreted
- Headache must be a brain tumor
- Rash must be skin cancer
Conversion Disorder
Involves real physical problems but the cause is psychological. The physical symptoms can’t be controlled by the person.
- Symptoms can include seizures, weakness or paralysis
Major Depressive Disorder
A mood disorder in which a person, for no apparent reason, experiences at least 23 weeks of depressed moods, diminished interest in activities, and other symptoms, such as feelings of worthlessness
Traits of Major Depressive Disorder
- Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day
- Little interest or pleasure in almost all activities
- Significant changes in weight or appetite
- Sleeping more or less than usual
- Agitated or decreased level of activity
- Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymic Disorder)
- A continuous, long-term form of depression. Feelings of being sad and empty, lost of interest in daily activities and have trouble getting things done. May also have low self-esteem, feel like a failure and feel hopeless.
- These feelings last for years and may interfere with your relationships, school, work and daily activities
