Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders
A vague feeling of apprehension or nervousness
- Anxiety disorder- where anxiety begins to take control and dominate a person’s life
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
An anxiety disorder characterized by disruptive levels of persistent, unexplained feelings of apprehension and tenseness
Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety
- The person must have at least 3 of the following:
- Restlessness
- Feeling on edge
- Difficulty concentrating/mind going blank
- Irritability
- Muscle tension
-Sleep disturbance
Phobia
An anxiety disorder characterized by disruptive, irrational fears of objects, activities, or situations
- The fear must be both irrational and disruptive
- Specific phobia
Agoraphobia
- Fear of situations the person views as difficult to escape from
- Fear of leaving one’s home or room in the house
Social Anxiety Disorder
- Phobias which produce fear in social situations
- Fear of speaking in public
- Was called social phobia
Selective Mutism
An anxiety disorder characterized by an inability to speak or communicate in certain social settings, such as at school, work, or in the community. The condition is usually first diagnosed in childhood.
- it is estimated that less than 1% of children have selective mutism.
Selective Mutism Symptoms
- Fidgeting, eye contact avoidance, lack of movement or lack of expression when in feared situations
- Speaking easily certain situations (e.g, at home or with familiar people), but not others (e.g, at school or with unfamiliar people)
