Postpartum Depression Disorder
Most new moms experience postpartum “baby blues” after childbirth, which commonly include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Baby blues usually begin within the first 2 to 3 days after delivery and may last for up to two weeks.
- But some new moms experience a more severe, long-lasting form of depression known as postpartum depression.
- In rarely extreme cases mood disorder called postpartum psychosis also may develop after childbirth.
Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD)
A type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons.
- SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year.
- Symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months
- Symptoms include sapping your energy and making you feel moody.
- These symptoms often resolve during the spring and summer months
- Treatment for SAD may include light therapy
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
A condition in which children or adolescents experience persistent irritability and anger and frequent, intense temper outbursts.
- Children with DMDD experience severe symptoms and often have significant problems at home and school and may also struggle to interact with peers
- DMDD is typically diagnosed between the ages of 6 and 10.
DMDD Symptoms
- Severe temper outbursts (verbal or behavioral), on average, three or more times per week
- Outbursts and tantrums that have been ongoing for at least 12 months
- Chronically irritable or angry mood most of the day, nearly every day
- Trouble functioning due to irritability in more than one setting, such as at home, at school, or with peers
- To be diagnosed with DMDD, a child must have experienced symptoms steadily for 12 or more months.
Bipolar Disorder
A mood disorder (formerly called manic depressive disorder) in which the person alternates between the hopelessness of depression and the overexcited and unreasonably optimistic state of mania
- Many times will follow a cyclical pattern
