Aims of Sentencing for a prison sentence?

A

Retribution- Is the sentence proportionate?
Rehabilitation- Changing the mindset through education, employment and training.
Reparation- Rebuilding the harm caused via social harm through Restorative Justice.
Public Protection- Removal physically of the danger from society.
Reduces crime and likely victims.
Deterrence- the ‘fear’ of punishment, taking away their freedom and fear of losing attachments. Environment of prison keeps people away.

Aims of Sentencing for a Community sentence?

A

Retribution- Offender did something to not warrant prison but still restriction.
Rehabilitation- unpaid work, education and treatment programmes = learn skills to live a crime free life.
Reparation- material harm is fixed via unpaid work and social harm is that they’re visible in the community.
Public Protection- Probation service still supervises offenders, curfewed and restricted to protect the public.
Deterrence- High vis jackets to name and shame, general- public see group and doesn’t want the embarrassment, individual- the offender feels shame.
