Q

What’s another issue with the probation service(2)

A

Environment/access to resources-> offenders only receive £46 discharge grant on their release with only 25% having a job to go to upon release causing probation to have a lower effect on social control as prisoners have no choice but to commit crime upon release

Q

What’s a limitation of prisons(1)

Q

What’s another limitation to prisons(2)

A

Poor condition/environment as many prisoners have low level of literacy and numeracy with 51% of those entering having the literacy and numeracy skills of a 1 year old with no access to resources in prison to help->limits prisons ability to rehabilitate and thus in turn produce effective social control for re offending

Q

What’s a limitation to the CPS(1)

A

Funding around 25% budget cuts over the last 5 years which reduces the effectiveness of the CPS as many cases will collapse or potentially lead to miscarriages of justice

17
Q

What’s another limitation to the CPS(2)

A

Legal barriers e.g. with the case of Harry Dunn who was killed by Anne Sacolas who was married to a diplomat meaning when she fled to America with the international law in place she couldn’t of been trialed in the UK thus legal barriers stop CPS from doing what they need to in order to prosecute criminals

18
Q

What’s another limitation of the CPS((3)

A

Issues with resources e.g. during the Liam Allen case where the CPS failed to disclose relevant text messages which led to the case getting dropped thus the CPS may be ineffective at achieving social control as it highlights they are both failing to prosecute the correct offenders but also in turn letting real offenders escape justice

19
Q

What’s a strength of the CPS(1)

A

Win rate->83% win rate meaning greater success allows for greater social control

20
Q

What’s another strength of the CPS(2)

A

Development-> The Narey report Brought about changes to the CPS including the requirement that CPS presentation was placed in police stations->more updates meaning better service and social control

21
Q

What’s a limitation to the judiciary(1)

A

Funding->around 25% budget cuts leading to less judges and higher case overload->less effective and lower social control

22
Q

What’s another limitation to the judiciary(2)

A

National policies/overcrowding as prisons are so overcrowded judges are told not to send people to prison which means that criminals are being let off lowering social control

23
Q

What’s another limitation to the judiciary(3)

A

Bias as a significant amount of judges come form wealthy background and large proportion are male(71%) meaning that poor people are likely to be punished and sentence are to harsh/lenient on women

24
Q

What’s a strength to the judiciary(1)

A

Level of expertise->You would need a minimum of five or seven years post qualification experience to be a judge meaning they are highly effective allowing greater social control

25
What's the final strength of the judiciary(2)
Separate power e.g. covid laws and Brexit laws judges step in to correct government->no corruption and greater social control
26
What's a limitation to charities and pressure groups(1)
Volunteer requirements e.g. Nacro is heavily reliant on volunteers and donations therefore cannot provide the same level of support as official services or may not be able to provide it exactly when needed or they may lack the specialist knowledge that could help many offenders
27
What's another limitation to charities and pressure groups(2)
Media reaction the prison reform trust often faces negative media attention as it is looking to improve the conditions of prisoners thus limits the support for charities and pressure groups supporting offenders in turn reducing their effectiveness
