Q

How to calculate extreme points and inflection points

A

Step 1: 1st, 2nd, 3rd derivative
Step 2: find f’(x)=0
Step 3: plug-in f’(x) = 0 points to OG to find value pair (x/y) extremas
Step 4: plug-in f’(x) point to f”(x) function to find out if min or max

Inflection points
Step 1: find f”(x)=0 then plug in points to OG function to find value pair pf inflection points (x/y)
Step 2: confirm- if f”’(x) is NOT 0, then it’s an inflection point

Q

What is business math?

A

Business math is the application of mathematical methods to solve business and economic problems. It uses tools such as functions, differential calculus, optimization and financial math. Business math can help analyze a company’s profit, revenue and costs. Additionally, it can help optimize production and pricing strategies as well as aid in making data-driven decisions.
For example it can calculate the equilibrium point for supply and demand, break-even points in production and economies of scale.
Business math is an essential tool that can help quantify and systemize business processes in leading companies to success.

Q

What is the difference between a derivative and differential?

A

Derivative: tells you the rate of change (slope)
Differential: tells you about the small changes in the variable themselves

Q

What is the difference between partial derivative and partial differential?

A

Partial derivative (dz/dx or fx): tells you how fast z changes when only x changes and y stays the same

Partial differential (dz): tells you the small actual change in z. Both x and y have small changes (dx and dy)

17
Q

What is an inflection point?

A

Where the curve changes richtung

18
Q

What should you know about the shape of a rational function?

A

It is a hyperbola
It has asymptotes and the 2 functions mirror each other

19
Q

What is the most important thing to remember about rational functions?

A

It shows if a company produces economy of scale!!!

20
Q

If you have economy of scale what business decisions are justified?

A

Mergers
Market domination

21
Q

What do you do in a problem if you see a demand and a supply function?

A

Just set to equal to get market equilibrium
The x is quantity
The y is price

22
Q

What must you always remember when solving square root equations?

A

There are always TWO answers
+ and -

23
Q

What are the rules for inflection point?

A

f “(x) = 0
f”’ (x) in NOT 0

24
Q

What are the rules for extreme point and min/max

A

Extreme point :
f ‘(x) = 0

Min/max:
Use extreme points in f”(x)
Determine if < or > 0

25
How do you evaluate marginal cost with f”(x) in a cost function?
If f” (x) is +, then MC is high (bad)- you have diminishing returns If f” (x) is -, then (good)- you have economies of scale/ increasing returns
26
How do you evaluate marginal revenue with f”(x) in a revenue function?
If f”(x) is +, then MR is up (good) If f”(x) is -, ten MR is down (bad) Same goes for marginal production
27
How to know if row or column vector?
If the number in which the matrix belongs is 1 then that’s the vector
28
What is the derivative of 2e^x?
2e^x
29
What are the steps in variable substitution to maximize function?
Step 1: create new function through variable sub Step 2: look for f ‘ (x) Step 3: plug-in f ‘(x) to f “ (x) to confirm max
30
What is the formula for effective annual rate?
t √ (FVN/PMT) -1
31
How to calculate initial amount before compound interest
P= A* (1+ r) ^ -t
32
How to calculate annuity savings?
FVN = PMT * q^n-1 / q-1
33
How to calculate initial amount before annuity savings?
PMT = FVN * q-1/ q^n-1
34
How to calculate annuity payment installment rate?
A = P* r* q^n-1/ q^n-1
35
How to calculate sum after simple interest
Savings= P* (1+r*t)
36
How do you see graphically that a parabola has a 0?
When it intersects x
37
When how do you read parameter “a” in a parabola?
by looking at the opening
38
If the fixed cost is given, how do you enter it in a profit function?
as C , the symbol is NEGATIVE
39
If you see a curve and you’re supposed to calculate the tangent, what do you do?
Calculate it at a convenient point You don’t need to calculate it exactly at the displayed point
40
When you see the words horizontal tangent and continuously, what does that tell you about the extrema?
GLOBAL min or max
41
How do you graphically know you have a min or max when you are given f’(x)?
Look where the function intersects x if it doesn’t even if it begins there it is NOT what you are looking for
42
What to do if you have f(x,y) and you’re supposed to find the partial differential?
Step 1: Do the 1st derivatives Step 2: Plug-in values Step 3: Add them together
