Aerobic and Anaerobic respiration Flashcards

1
Q

What is aerobic respiration ?
Where does aerobic respiration take place ?
Word equation for aerobic respiration

A

respiration using oxygen. It’s the most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose. aerobic respiration goes on all the time in plants and animals.
- inside mitochondria

Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water

Q

When does anaerobic respiration occur ?
What is anaerobic respiration ?
Word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles.

A
  • during vigorous exercise when you body can’t supply enough oxygen to your muscles.
  • Anaerobic means w/o oxygen . Its the incomplete breakdown of glucose making lactic acid

Glucose -> lactic acid

Q

When is anaerobic respiration useful ?

A

only during emergencies, as anaerobic respiration does not transfer as much energy as aerobic respiration, because glucose is not fully oxidised

Q

why does Anaerobic respiration occur in plants and leaves?

A
  • plant and yeast cells can’t respire without oxygen but they produce ethanol; and co2 instead of lactic acid.

Glucose -> ethanol + c02

Q

What’s fermentation and uses of it ?

A

Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells -> fermentation
- food and drink industry, fermentation by yeast is great value as its used to make alcohol and bread
- In breadmaking, fermentation is used to make the bread rise
- beer and wine making, fermentation used to produce alcohol
