Respiration Flashcards
(6 cards)
All living things respire, its how energy is transferred from food to cells.
Define respiration
Is respiration exo or endothermic ?
Process of transferring energy from the breakdown on glucose to every cell in the body
Exo = transfers energy to environment
Three example of how organisms use energy transferred by respiration
1) To build large molecules from smaller ones
2) in animals, allows muscles to contract
3) in mammals and birds, energy used to keep body temp steady in colder surroundings
In a cell ..
there are lots of chemical reactions happening all the time, which are controlled by enzymes.
Many of these reactions are linked together to form bigger reactions.
Reactant -> enzyme = product -> enzyme = product
in some of these reactions, larger molecules are made from small ones.
EXAMPLE
1) small glucose molecules joined together in reactions to form starch, glycogen and cellulose
2) lipid molecule each made from one molecule of glycerol and 3 fatty acids
3) glucose combined with nitrate ions to make amino acids which then make proteins
in other reactions, larger molecules are made from small ones.
Example
1) Glucose broken down in respiration, respiration transfers energy to power all reactions in the body that make molecules
2) Excess protein is broken down in a reaction to produce urea . Urea is then excreted in urine
What is respiration ?
sum of all reactions that happen in a cell or body
