What are NGOs?

A

Non-governmental organisation
A non-profit organisation that operates independently from the government
typically NGO’s offer aid to social and political issues.
Example - Oxfam

A

Transnational companies.
Large business enterprises which produce and sell globally and have global supply chains.

NGOs/INGOs real world examples…

A
  • Countries such as US, UK, Sweden have greatly experienced a great increase in GNP between 1992 and 2006 whilst the poorest countries such as Congo and Gambia (which were in civil war) have decreased their GNP.
  • NGOs in UK generally raise approx 50 million pounds annually.

  • Cuba experiences a hard time exporting goods because of the trade embargo emplaced upon them by the US
  • The World Bank received 493 million pounds from DFID in multilateral aid

A

Structural adjustment programs - the IMF and World Bank use SAPs as a condition for loans. For instance, they say they’ll only give a loan if the nations adopts neo-liberal free market policies.
