Neo-Malthusians Flashcards
(8 cards)
Neo-Malthusians basic ideas?
Believes the world cannot sustain the current population growth and that populations are too big for the resources available in developing countries and actually holds back the process of development.
- Sort out population first and development will follow
Neo-Malthusians on environment??
Would state that the increase in a large population size ultimately leads to a vast amount of environmental damage through actions such as burning crops
Example of population growth damaging environment?
Mumbai where they have seen an 18% increase in air population between 2007 and 2018
Neo-Malthusians on health, education and employment?
Idea of overpopulation having a large negative impact on employment as the availability of jobs may become scarce and more difficult to obtain.
- In education, classrooms in developing countries may become overly populated making is difficult for children to learn effectively.
Neo-Malthusians on industrialisation/urbanisation?
Strongly argue that the influence of urbanisation has led to overpopulation in small sized areas, causing a large overall struggle with employment and resources.
Neo-Malthusians on population growth?
Would state that population growth is an ongoing issue that needs to be controlled.
Neo-Malthusians on trade, aid and debt?
The suggests that over-populated areas in developing countries would more require the need for aid and are more vulnerable to the effects of debt.
Neo-Malthusians on war and conflict?
The large population size and increased need for resources is what ultimately leads to conflict occuring.
