What are the basic ideas of dependency theory?
The west offers developing nations help, to exploit them.
Everything they provide has strings attached
Adoping western norms and values will leave developing nations worse off and likely in debt.
Dependency theory on Gender/women in developing world?
Women are often left behind in developing nations as they are told to stay home and be housewives and let men be the breadwinner.
Dependency theory on environment?
The developed countries take advantage of the developing countries by telling them to derease their carbon footprint, however, developed countries are increasing their footprint.
Dependency theory on health, education, employment?
- Women are often left out of education system because they need to be at home
- males are often given best jobs and therefore earn more each year
- the healthcare system is often aimed at males but female nurses are also employed but rarely
Dependency theory on industrialisation/urbanisation?
Argue industrialisation is crucial for independent development but countries must control their own development, not the west.
Argue colonialism has made developing almost impossible for developing countries.
Dependency theory on population growth?
Believe poverty causes high population growth for a variety of reasons
- poorer people are more likely to have more children as they are essentially financial assets who will work
What did Kaplan say (modernisation)?
Argued that parts of the poor world are collapsing into anarchy due to population growth.
Dependency theory on aid?
If developing countries accept aid then they are vulnerable to exploitation
Dependency theory on trade?
It is another way of forcing the developing world to become more dependent on western nations by giving them a form of income.
Dependency theory on debt?
Vulture funds come and buy the dept and sue the natios involved.
Dependency theory on globalisation?
Argue that in order to develop, developing nations must break away from west and reject norms and values.
Due to interconnectedness, means nations become more reliant on others.
This leads to exploitation, therefore further development is restricted.
Dependency theory on TNC’s, NGO’s and IGO’s?
Agents of development enhance the hold that developed nations have on developing nations by making them more dependent on their support.
- This leads them unable to develop without their involvement
- Environment becomes exploited
Dependency theory on war and conflict?
Underdeveloped countries cannot develop because of poverty due to wars.
War wouldn’t be the leading factor for underdevelopment and would not solve any disputes regarding development as they aren’t in the position to develop anyway.
