Suggests that the function of sociologists today is to provide ‘sociology for one world’
i.e. a global sociology that investigates and analyses the increasing interconnections and interdependence of the world.

There are ties that bind us together, e.g. drugs, crime, sex, disease, people, pollution etc.

Idea of McDonaldization.
To describe the process by which the principles of fast food restaurants are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world.
What does Giddens and Beck say?
Suggest that global communication means that is is now difficult for people to avoid reflecting on world events for acknowledging that we live in a world characterised by risk, e.g. global warming, war and terrorism
Globalist?
Believe globalisation is a fact that has real consequences across the world.
Hyperglobalist?
Welcomes developments and suggests globalisation will eventually produce tolerance and responsible citizens.
Pessimistic?
Argues that globalisation is a negative phenomenon because it is a form of western imperialism.
Traditionalist?
Do not believe globalisation is occurring, it is a myth and exaggerated.
We are just experiencing evolution or capitalist production of trade.
Transformationalists?
Middle ground between globalists and traditionalists, it is foolish to reject the concept.
Argues that it should be understood as a complex set of interconnecting relationships.
Consumption?
Consuming material and cultural goods and resources.
