What is aggression?
Behaviour with the intent to harm
What is assertion?
Forceful behaviour within the rules of the game that have no intent to harm
What does instinct theory state?
Aggression is spontaneous and innate
What does the frustration-aggression hypothesis state?
Inevitable aggression occurs when goals are blocked and the performer becomes frustrated
What is catharsis?
When an aggressive intent it given an outlet, the aggressive drive can be reduced so the performer experiences catharsis
What does aggressive cue hypothesis state? (Berkowitz)
Increased frustration will lead to increased arousal levels and a drive towards aggressive responses
These responses will occur if certain ‘cues’ are present that act as a stimulus for aggressive behaviour
What does social learning theory state?
Aggression is a learned response that is copied from others
How is behaviour copied?
Observe-Identify-Reinforce-Copy
How can aggression be prevented?
Do not reinforce aggression in training
Punish players by sending them off
Use mental rehearsal or relaxation to lower arousal
Channel aggression into assertion
