What is stress?
The response of an individual to a threat
What is eustress?
The positive response of the body to a threat
What is a stressor?
A stimulus that causes stress
What is cognitive stress?
Psychological stress - negative thoughts and feelings and the inability to cope with the demands of the situation
Attentional narrowing may occur
What is attentional narrowing?
When arousal and anxiety levels are increased so the ability to take in information or cues is reduced, so some important information can be missed (attentional garbage)
What is somatic stress?
Physiological stress
Can increase heart rate and sweating, or even muscular tension
What are examples cognitive stress management techniques?
Thought stopping
Positive self-talk
Imagery
Visualisation
Mental rehearsal
Psychological skills training
Attentional control and cue utilisation
What are styles of attentional control? (to avoid attentional wastage)
Broad

Biofeedback - measures physical changes under stress
