What is a leader?
Someone who has influence in helping others to achieve their goals
What is a prescribed leader?
Someone from the group who is appointed from the outside of the group
What is an emergent leader?
Someone who is appointed from within the group

What are the three leadership styles?
The autocratic/task-orientated style
The democratic/person-orientated style
The laissez-faire style
What is the autocratic/task-orientated style?
The leader makes all the decision and dictates instructions to the group
The coach must remain with the group and maintain contact when using this style
What is the democratic/person-orientated style?
The coach adopts more of a sympathetic approach to leadership and seeks the opinion of the group before making decisions
The group usually continues to work when the leader isn’t present
What is the laissez-faire style?
The leader does very little and leaves the group to it
What does Fiedler’s contingency model of leadership state?
The autocratic/task-orientated style is best used in a favourable and least favourable situation
The democratic/person-orientated style is best used in a moderately favourable situation
What are characteristics of a favourable situation?
The leader is respected
Good support in the group
High ability group
High levels of motivation
The task is clear to the team

The leader is not respected
There may be hostility within the group
