Alleles Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is the difference between a gene and an allele?
A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a trait, while an allele is a version of a gene.
How do alleles affect inherited characteristics?
Different alleles can result in different traits being expressed.
What is the relationship between a genotype and a phenotype?
Genotype is the genetic makeup; phenotype is the physical expression of the genes.
What are homozygous and heterozygous genotypes?
homozygous:%20both%20alleles%20are%20the%20same;%20Heterozygous%3A%20the%20alleles%20are%20different.
What are genetic diagrams used for?
To predict the possible combinations of alleles in offspring from parent genotypes.
Why might some alleles in a genotype not be seen in the phenotype?
Because they may be recessive and masked by a dominant allele.
