Enzyme activity Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is the effect of temperature on enzyme activity?
Temperature increases enzyme activity up to an optimum point, then denatures the enzyme if too high.
What is the effect of substrate concentration on enzyme activity?
Higher substrate concentration increases enzyme activity until all active sites are occupied (saturation point).
What is the effect of pH on enzyme activity?
Enzymes have an optimum pH; too high or too low pH can denature them and reduce activity.
What is meant by the optimum pH/temperature of an enzyme?
The pH or temperature at which the enzyme works most effectively.
How do you calculate the rate of enzyme activity from experimental data?
By measuring the amount of product formed or substrate used over time.
Why do temperature, substrate concentration, and pH affect enzyme activity?
They affect the shape and efficiency of the enzyme’s active site.
